When I saw Amelia’s pieces online, I found them especially intriguing. She painted images without faces, leaving some mystery to each work of art. I love that she allows the piece to really lend itself to anyone, since there is no facial recognition, and in the same way, they can be quite personal with the special attention to detail in the figure. Amelia uses her prints on custom phone cases, that are the ultimate gift, and still affordable. I loved making one for my Mama this Mother’s Day, with images of me and Tata!

The ladies of CrayolaMode use fun, bright, playful shades to capture special moments, and it brought me back to my childhood. Their pieces are perfect for a children’s bedroom or the family portrait wall!

Mir·a·cle: an amazing product or achievement, or an outstanding example of something.
And that’s exactly what Amanda Lacey Miracle Tonic is. I have been incorporating a toner, tonic, or astringent into my skin care routine even since I was 12 years-old when my mother brought me to Bloomingdale's and introduced me to my greatest love of all, beauty products.
Although I’m embarrassed to say that for a really long time, I had no idea why I was using this post cleaning product or even what it did. For most of my teenage years, I thought it was just makeup remover, as I didn’t wash my face very well apparently.
Not all toners are created equally. They can differ in what ingredients are used depending on what skincare concerns are being addressed. Mostly, they break down extra oil or impurities left behind by your cleanser, they shrink pores, moisturize, balance out pH levels, and prepare your skin to receive serums and creams, maximizing their effects.
I’ve always used a toner, as I believe I was hypnotized by the beauty department at Bloomingdales. Some of the toners I have used throughout the decades seemed to have no visible benefits, while others have had more rewards, but only with long term use. That’s until I tried Amanda Lacey’s Miracle Tonic.
Why it works: here’s what’s in it. Mint Leaf Flavanones, Rosemary, Camphor Oil and Allantoin to heal your skin, reduce redness, and irritation. Antimicrobial Salicylic Acid to brighten, reduce pore size and clear pore congestion.
Use it on problem areas to keep excess oils at bay, or spot dab with a Q-Tip. Good for all skin types, especially oily complexions, calming and repairing.
After using for two days my skin has never been better. Truly a miracle in a bottle.

Lyft Car Seat Mode - City Kids
When I first had kids, for a long time, I was terrified of taking them anywhere. I stuck to my neighborhood like glue and just took my babies out anywhere that was within walking distance. We all know I can walk for miles, so that was not really an issue. However, the grandparents on the Upper East Side were never seeing us!
Nowadays, we are so lucky to have car services like Lyft, who give the option to select a car that comes with a car seat installed and arrives right to your doorstep! The past few years, I’ve used various apps to try out different options, and Lyft was always the most reliable, and above all, had the most responsible drivers. It’s really important to feel safe in the car with your kids, and it’s also very convenient to have a car seat properly installed to ensure that safety. Thank you for the consistently great ride, Lyft! Use code MAMAANDTATA for $5 off your next Lyft car seat ride!
MAMA-OF-THE-MOMENT: Emma Heming Willis, Creator of CocoBaba
Describe yourself in 3 words...
Organized, professional, and a great multi-tasker.
What inspired you to create CocoBaba?
The idea came to me in a very organic way. I was pregnant with my first child and looking for beauty products designed especially for moms-to-be that used safe, natural ingredients. I wanted something that would help stave off stretch marks as much as possible. I realized that most products didn’t meet my needs. I became acutely aware of what I was putting in and on my body, and how it could affect my unborn child as well as myself. I decided to create my own skin line whose ingredients I would oversee and make certain met my criteria. There needed to be a product in the market that was safe and simple for moms-to-be who are conscious about their health and beauty routine and products they use.
What is coming up in the pipeline for your business?
Launching CocoBaba in the US is our next big move. CocoBaba is produced and manufactured in Germany and currently only sold within Europe. I wanted to start small and to be able to iron out any kinks before bringing it stateside. So, I’m more than ready to get to this point, which is a truly exciting next step for me.
What is your personal skincare routine?
Being a working mom of two, my skincare routine needs to be easy but effective. I start with Lumion’s Oxygen mist and Serum, then I alternate Dr. Barbara Sturm products and UMA Oils. I love Sturm’s Glow Drops and I adore UMA’s anti-aging oil. These three beauty lines are my total go-to must-haves.
What skincare products do you prefer to use on your children?
I use Honest Co. for my daughter’s hair and body in the shower. For after shower creams, I alternate between my CocoBaba products. Sometimes I use the Coconut Body Oil if they seem on the drier side or the Coconut Body Butter Mousse. My youngest Evelyn, usually requests the oil because she knows she’ll get a little massage out of it.
What is your favorite family vacation destination?
We usually head to Turks and Caicos. It’s a place my husband has been going to for 20 years and now as a couple I’ve been going there for 11 years. We never get tired out it. It’s very serene, great people, terrific food, and not to mention the scenery. Our family is all about a beach holiday.
What are your favorite kid-friendly restaurants in New York?
My husband and I love sushi so we were hoping our kids would follow suit, so we introduced sushi to them early on. We started taking them to Nobu, which is a fun restaurant as they love to sit close to the sushi bar and watch it being made. There’s a lot of hustle and bustle, which makes it all the more fun and entertaining for them. We frequent Rosa Mexicana, as the kids love seeing the guacamole being made, and it’s delicious. Next on the list is Benihana, but my gosh is that place popular—hard to get a reservation!
What are your most memorable family activities on weekends?
We live about an hour out of the city so most of our weekends are spent in the city. We love going to all the usual museums—Natural History, Children’s Museum, and The Met. My kids are at a great age that we are introducing them to Broadway. We took them to see The Lion King, which is just such a beautiful play. We are taking them to see Aladdin for Mabel’s 6th birthday, which is coming up way too soon! We live close to Central Park, so when the weather is nice we are always there.
What values do you hope to instill in your children?
There’s so many aren’t there? We have a saying at home—speak freely, live fearlessly. I want my kids to know that their voice is important.
Where can our readers learn more about you and CocoBaba?

SHAPE HOUSE: ph. 855-567-2346, email: info@shapehouse.com
I certainly sweat enough at the Tracy Anderson Studio every morning, but a little extra can’t hurt! Everyone has told me about the positive effects of infrared saunas and sweating in general. When we sweat we are allowing toxins to leave our body, creating space for a healthy mind, and improved immunity. The infrared technology used at the Shape House allows you to sweat it out in an hour while laying comfortably, watching your favorite movie in the privacy of your own room. I was nervous at first that I might feel claustrophobic, but it was actually very zen, much like a spa experience. When I walked out of the room my face was glowing, and to my surprise I felt energized. Other benefits of these treatments are weight loss, decreased muscle soreness and deeper sleep! I’ll definitely be adding these visits to my weekly regimen.

BKLYN KIDS MKT: Free Arts NYC + City Point’s Earth Day
Right across the bridge, with a low-key, earthy vibe, Brooklyn is expanding and evolving with the times. What better way to celebrate Earth Day, than with a fun-filled day of activities and shopping with the entire family? I co-hosted City Point’s #BKLYNKIDSMKT over the weekend and fell in love with this indoor complex of cute shops and amazing food stands (plus, a Target and Trader Joe’s!).
In addition to the kids market, Free Arts NYC teamed up with animator Mike Perry and Korean Corner USA to create the largest 100% recyclable maze in the U.S. where kids could run and play for hours. There was also a face painting stand, large drawing wall, and fun planting projects. When it came to shopping, we found booths with the sweetest children’s clothing from Oeuf, Yoya, Petit Pilou, Love Me Baby, Sammy and Nat, and Sat Nam Bebe. There were also stands of unicorn toys and accessories from Brooklyn Owl, and the greatest new organic baby food company, Little Spoon. I loved the all natural beauty brand products made at Boheme Luxe beauty, particularly their face and body glow! This was a fun-filled day you would not want to miss!

Lately my lips have been so chapped. The cold weather outside and the dry heat inside takes a toll on my skin. I always add extra hydration to my face in the colder months, but often hydrating my lips gets overlooked or the product gets worn off quickly while talking, eating and kissing, etc.
Full disclosure, I like how my lips look when they first become chapped. They become a pretty shade of red and have a natural pink lip liner that makes them appear bigger. But it’s a fine line between sexy chapped lips and scary chapped lips. The burning, peeling and cracking lips is not fun or cute. Thankfully, there is a little gem of a product that everyone should own called LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask. Let me start off by saying this works and I’ve not come across anyone who disagrees. I broke open the pretty pink packaging one night when I definitely needed lip rescue. I applied the soothing berry scented balm and went to bed. In the morning no chapped lips!! One night, cured.
LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask treats dryness and fine lines and is suitable for all skin types. It’s full of vitamin C and antioxidants and has an exclusive moisture wrap technique which forms a protective film over your lips sealing in the moisture. It works its magic overnight.

LITTLE HOUSE CALLS: Email: drhershberg@littlehousecalls.com and drlocker@littlehousecalls.com, Ph. (347) 480-8704, Website: www.littlehousecalls.com
As parents, we go through so many first times, so many new experiences, and there’s no rule book for what can arise in this journey. We are all unique in our family dynamic, with no two families the same. Therefore, what’s good for one, may not work for another, and we are in for a long haul of trial and error. We can all be grateful for Little House Calls, founded by two brilliant psychologists Dr. Alison Locker and Dr. Rebecca Hershberg, who provide expert help along the way. These women take a very hands-on approach to tackling all of the various parental struggles, and as parents, they also have the personal experience to back up their methods. Whatever the issue may be, these women go into the home and/or school for observations so that they can manage the behaviors as they are occurring in real-time. They typically can solve the problems in short term sessions, allowing parents to re-work the way they view the situation, and therefore re-work their reactions. Rebecca and Alison believe in love and limits, which I found particularly intriguing. They think in this era, with all of the hyper parenting, we are constantly going and doing, instead of sitting back and being present. They told me it’s been scientifically proven that if each parent spent five minutes of quality time with their children everyday of the week, it is far more meaningful and effective than planning these major events to attend together over the weekend. So, stop exhausting yourselves with all of the run around, and stay put. Consistency and quality over quantity!

How did your passion for cooking develop?
As long as I can remember, food has been something that has brought my family together. Whether it was gathering in the kitchen as my mom cooked dinner, eating a pancake feast my dad whipped up on the weekends, or baking cookies with my grandma, cooking was a consistent activity we did together. In addition to those happy memories, I've always loved the creative process that's behind developing recipes and, of course, the result being delicious food to eat!
What are your favorite recipes for family dinners?
I make a lot of roasted chicken because everybody loves it and there's usually leftovers to put in sandwiches or salads the next day. We do salmon probably once a week (because Carson makes it - break for me!) and I'm a huge fan of anything in the slow cooker to make family dinner nights fast and easy.
What are your top recipes for entertaining?
I love customizable recipes, like tacos or the Baked Potato Bar that's in my book, because it allows large groups to build meals around their own preferences. Also, what's better than a big pan of comforting lasagna or casserole that can feed an army?!
What is your guilty pleasure?
Probably greasy, Chinese take-out. Beef and broccoli, crispy egg rolls, fried rice...this is the kind of food I want to eat in my pajamas with control over the television, preferably alone.
What is your favorite family vacation?
Every summer we spend time in Orange County, California, right on the beach, with family and friends. It's the one time of year that Carson and I truly unwind. I read books, paint rocks (truth), play with my kids and cook a lot of seafood. Sometimes we even lock our phones in a drawer! Can you imagine?!
What is your best advice for other Mamas?
No judgment and no comparisons! In this age of social media, it's easy to get distracted with other people and to assume someone's life is better or worse than our own. The truth is, we are all in this together, and we are all trying to do the best we can. It always helps me to remember that I'm not alone, that so many other moms have felt the way I'm feeling in any given situation. And here we go, but I'm going to say it...life goes by so fast! We blink and our kids are grown-ups, so if we can pause a few times each day to take it all in, we'll be better moms for it.
How do your children inspire your cooking?
I'm always searching for healthy, adaptable meals for their growing bodies and picky palates. Nothing is more annoying than being a short order cook, so I try to stick to dinners that can easily be tweaked to please everyone. Sometimes my son comes home and requests certain things, which always helps to pull me out of a food rut!
Are your children picky eaters? What’s your tip for picky eaters?
Um, yes. My younger two are worse than my older one. As he's gotten older, he's willing to try more foods, which makes me ridiculously happy. As for the girls, I just keep trying different things, as well as the same things, over and over and over. Eventually they might change their mind and decide to try it. Even like it?! When that doesn’t work, I'm not above sneaking food into their diets. My Sneaky One-Pot Mexican Pasta is a great recipe for that, as it's loaded with healthy squash (shh, don't tell my kids).
How do you like to spend time as a family?
We love to play games. In fact, almost every night around the dinner table we play either 20 Questions, Concentration or Telephone. We love having "movie nights" where I pop popcorn on the stove (and they smother it with Parmesan cheese). And we love to be outside, particularly when the weather is nice (because cold weather makes me...cold). Golf, hanging at the beach, family walks around the block, etc. Mostly, our family time revolves around big barbecues with friends because, food!
When you go out to eat with the family, what are your favorite restaurants?
Sushi is definitely our go-to as it's my son's favorite food. The girls stick to udon noodles and edamame, but my son loves a lot of sashimi. We also love Mexican restaurants, particularly because we lived in California for so long where we were surrounded by great spots.
Please share your favorite recipes from your new book...
This is a hard question, because I truly love everything, but some of my favorites include the Open-Faced Green Breakfast Sandwich, the Greek Nachos, the Buffalo Chicken Meatballs and the Homemade Girl Scout Cookies.
What values or lessons do you hope to instill in your children?
I hope they value hard work, I hope they are always honest and above all, kind, kind, KIND. Mostly, I want them to be happy, and to be the best versions of themselves.

I am constantly on the run when in NYC, whether I am going to school drop-offs and pickups, getting to the gym, or racing to shoot features. I’m always looking for a big bag to store all of my various outfits for the day, one that is not only practical, but also attractive. STATE bags came out with a brilliant collection of backpacks and fanny packs, lined with the map of New York (so I’ll never get lost) that are so chic and functional, I wanted the entire line! My favorite piece by far is the floral backpack, because I am yearning for those spring blooms to pop up in this city and wearing it just makes me happy. They also carry some higher-end leather backpacks that I’m crazy about, so make sure to look for those as well.

When it comes to cosmetic dermatology I have a hard time trusting many! There are so many people out there that can seriously damage your skin to the point of no return, and we have to be extra safe when it comes to the face. Lauren Abramowitz, founder of Park Avenue Skin Solutions loves her job, and pays close attention to detail. She is incredibly knowledgeable about all of the most innovative procedures in her field, and she is also a pleasure to be around. I would go to her for anything from PRP and Botox, to laser treatments and vitamin infusions. She is quick with her hands, and precise with her needles, not to mention conveniently located in TriBeCa. Many of you have asked me about fillers, which I do not use, however if I were going to give it a whirl, Lauren would be my girl!
Read moreThe Power of Retinol
Retinol is something that I personally took a long time to understand. Retinol, Retin A, 1%, 3%, patches, lotions, serums, prescription, over the counter. I surrender. It was so overwhelming and when I originally tested one out my skin did not react kindly, turning red and raw, causing a strike on trying another. After every brand promoting a retinol product and all the buzz I realized I needed to try again, but first I needed to arm myself with knowledge before I went back into battle.
Retinol is vitamin A. Vitamin A has many functions including growth and development, maintenance of the immune system and good vision, and interestingly hold properties that act as human growth hormone (the fountain of youth) While we can receive loads of vitamin A through the foods we eat, when transformed into a topical treatment, the anti-aging benefits can be extreme. When we think of aging, most of us just think of wrinkles but in fact as we age we develop a multitude of things contributing to a new look. Thicker skin, loss of elasticity, slow breakdown of collagen and sunspots, are all among the aging process. Vitamin A, retinol, tackles all of it.
I would be lying if I said I have now learned everything there is to know about retinol but I do have a solid understanding of what it does and why. Without sounding like a scientist I present you with a simple breakdown and a few tips:
Retinol stimulates the production of new skin cells. This helps reduce fine lines, fight acne and reduce discoloration from hyperpigmentation or sunspots. While prescription retinoids are stronger and generally more affective, over-the-counter retinol is a great way to start. As it can be quite aggressive and is often best to build up to a higher dose.
Many people have fears about the sun and using retinol. There seems to be some confusion here. Yes, the ingredient itself is sensitive to the sun, but that is why retinols are to be used at night and washed off in the morning. Also, with more cellular turnover it should be understood that newer fresher skin may be more sensitive to things like tanning. Just so we are clear nothing about wearing the product properly is harming your skin in any environment, only how you treat your skin.
Retinol can irritate your skin. This is very true! That is why they come in different strengths and not necessarily used daily, or else they can be very irritating and ineffective. The best way to adjust is to start at a lower percentage 2 to 3 times a week and then build up in days or in concentration.
Here is what I recommend for each skin type.
For sensitive skin. Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil
For dull skin. Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic Acid + Retinol Brightening Solution.
For oily skin. Dr. Brandt Overnight Resurfacing Serum.
For Hyperpigmentation. SkinMedica Retinol Complex .25
For wrinkles. Biossanee Squalane + Phyto Retinol Serum
For stronger skin. Skinceuticals Retinol 1.0
For eyes. Dermalogica Age Reversal Eye Complex.
A few personal tips.
Different parts of the face are stronger than others. This is a general statement when it comes to most areas like eyes and cheeks versus forehead, but in some cases, can be personal for your specific skin. I like to mix and match. My cheeks are more sensitive as I’m susceptible to rosacea. I often use a lower concentrate on my cheeks and higher where I have stronger skin that need more work like forehead and laugh lines. I also use a decently high dose as a spot treatment for a pimple in the evening and see amazing results by morning.
All in all don’t be scared of retinols but know what you are dealing with. It’s a potent product with real results. Be responsible with your skin and it will show you the love and respect that you put into it.

More and more, we are becoming health conscious in our homes. The new wave of natural, non-toxic products is upon us, and as a Mama, this has become increasingly important. There are so many products out there between cleaning supplies, toiletries, and makeup, and we need to choose wisely. In the U.S., the FDA standards are shocking, and we need to play a bigger role as a consumer, to read the fine lines on ingredients we are using around our children. Jenna Coviello, founder of Take Good Care, came over to educate me on the topic. Her service helps us cleanse our homes of toxic carcinogens that may have otherwise fooled us with there “all natural and organic” labels. Jenna takes every product in your home and swaps it out for the best non-toxic version of what you are using, to make your home a safer family environment. I learned so much from her, and highly recommend this home cleanse.
Spring Break Ready
For many this is time for fun in the sun, skiing on the slopes or a relaxing staycation. As I head off to the beach, I’ve noticed my skin is practically see-through I’m so pale. Never having done a spray tan in fear of looking unnatural or having color transfer, I decided to look into TAN-LUXE.
At first I was fearful to give this product a try since the only faux tan I do is bronzer. But faced with the hard reality of my ghostly coloring I knew what I had to do. Although I have seen TAN-LUXE in many of my go-to beauty stores and it’s all over some of my favorite bloggers sites, I still went in with caution. I started by reading user reviews. This isn’t always a reliable source since so many unknown factors can contribute to what is being said, but I knew what I was looking for. There were no horror stories of turning orange or limbs falling off. Ok check. Then I went to the TAN-LUXE site where I read the ingredients and their story. Here is what I found.
TAN-LUXE is a tailor-made approach to self-tanning made with their very own patented technologies. It is an oil that is easily added into your lotion or treatments so it can be applied evenly. The level of glow you want is controlled by how many drops you use, 2-4 is recommended for the face. The TAN-LUXE oil contains raspberry seed oil, aloe vera, and vitamin E boosting the skin and adding extra glow. The best part is it is orderless! Ok check again, ready to try.
Round one I went very light on my face using two drops and 4 drops on my body, with the separate body TAN-LUXE. The application was so easy, odorless as promised, and fast! At first I didn’t notice any change but as the evening went on my face had a slight glow and my body was fully sun kissed! It was a total success....until I looked at my hands, they were orange. I re-read the instructions and they very clearly state to wash hands thoroughly. Whoops. Guess I got a little excited to finally get some color. But I was so fascinated and thrilled that the product worked as it said on the body parts they were instructed for.
So if you need some sun before you head to the beach, then this is for you. If you know how the sun affects the aging process and want to stay young forever, then this is for you. If you are going skiing and need to adjust that fun ski goggle tan, then this is for you. If you had a staycation and are jealous of seeing all your friends on Instagram, then this is for you.
