How many years have you been in business in NYC?
It will be 10 years in March!
How did you get your start and what was your initial inspiration?
We used to make beaded jewelry as kids. We were always very close and it was something we did together. Being the younger sister, I was constantly looking for ways to impress Jodie so she'd want to hang out with me. I taught myself how to do wirework on our dad's medical tools and my designs got more sophisticated. Luckily, Jodie was impressed. In college, I visited a small village in Kenya that was in need of a health facility, and subsequently co-founded a non-profit that fundraised for the cause. The vibrant colors and tribal aesthetic of the Maasai tribe was the initial inspiration for our iconic bib design (#putabibonit), and to this day there is a great deal of African influence in our work.
What do you feel differentiates you from others in your field?
We're not formally trained - I studied Psychology and Spanish and Jodie studied Business and PR - so we have a very unique and informal approach to design and creativity that is somewhat boundless. Moreover, our sisterhood and our passion for not only design and creativity, but also for life - travel, adventure, family and experience- makes for a distinct, ever-evolving aesthetic. Our designs have soul because they are an extension of us and our myriad of experiences as sisters.
What do you feel gives you longevity in this big city with so many options?
Our ability to evolve as people and as a brand.
How do you positively impact your clientele?
In addition to making our customers feel beautiful and confident, we aspire to empower women in underdeveloped areas of the world through our partnerships with companies like Indego Africa. We also promote sisterhood, compassion and kindness within the Dannijo community.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Getting to meet fascinating individuals across industries, traveling to new places, and the creative process.
What is your favorite secret NYC spot?
Face Love facials, Plaza M for manicures & pedicures, Emilio’s Ballato for Italian and the bar at Raouls.
How do you benefit mamas?
We help them feel beautiful. When you become a mother, you have less time for yourself and getting ready. Jewelry always makes women feel beautiful and personalizes their looks.
What is the most memorable feedback a client has given you?
An email we received from a customer which said, “I have to tell you that I absolutely LOVE your product. I have been a fan of your style since before you became the size you are today. I was in the habit of buying from the department stores until I started to follow you on Instagram and now have found my way to your site. I am a professional working mother of 2 and I love fashion. I work in Human Resources but started my career in buying. I love the edgy, rock n roll, fashion forward, glamorous, cutting edge style that is Dannijo. I love that you get motherhood. I love that you get style. I love that you get beauty. I love that you get individuality. I am so impressed with your brand. Thank you for being unique and thank you for being the brand that you are. You bring color, light, style and happiness to my life when I put on your jewelry and look at your site. Thank you for the inspiration.”

What is the best advice anyone's ever given you? Or what words do you live by?
Live lightly AND trust your gut.
As moms, the day can escape us, what is your best time-saving trick?
Wearing sneakers as much as possible as I’m always running around the city. Also, I keep my jewelry in a tray by the door so I can always accessorize on my way out the door.
