The sun shining on me and my brother as we run in the grass, perfectly salted, clothed in nothing but our swimsuits and friendship bracelet, eating watermelon. This is how I picture every summer of my childhood. Little did I know then that our sweet refreshing treat was helping to keep us healthy and youthful looking.
We all know how hydrating watermelon is, being that it is made up of over 90% water, but it’s also dense of nutrients that are proven to aid in a number of health concerns. Asthma, cancer and inflammation are on the list of health ailments that the the antioxidants, minerals and vitamins in watermelon can help prevent or treat.
Often being named “the worlds healthiest food” for its medicinal magic, many of these same factors do wonders for our looks. “The worlds healthiest food” also seems to be “the fountain of youth.” We all love slathering our faces in our vitamin enriched products for the rewarding effects, but it’s also highly beneficial when these vitamins are digested, reaching the source of the issue and possibly preventing it all together.
Products advertised with watermelon in them have been popping up all over beauty counters lately. Its ingredients have been in many products over the years that we have been unaware of, but now it seems that the secret is out with this potent ingredient, and brands are putting it right in our face not just on our face.
Being a super fan of "Shark Tank," and never missing an episode, I was very excited, to say the least, when my two loves appeared on the same screen, Mark Cuban + panel, and a K-beauty product featuring watermelon. Feeding into my curiosity of products I immediately went on a journey to understand the effects of the watermelon.
Watermelon houses a large amount of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is crucial for us in order to produce collagen. As we age, our collagen levels deplete. When boosting our collagen levels, skin is rejuvenated from the root, rebuilding connective tissue, creating a better structure for blood vessels that carry and distribute oxygen and nutrients to our skin, hence reducing wrinkles, sagging, and sun damage. Vitamin C also combats free radicals in our bodies, which is what turns our hair and nails brittle, and causes sun spots and freckles. With this large presence of Vitamin C and other antioxidants that hydrate and tighten, watermelon as an ingredient in skin care is a natural next step to eating it throughout summer.
By far my favorite watermelon products on the market come from Glow Recipe. Glow Recipe was created by two beauty industry vets in Korea who have brought the much desired eastern beauty secrets to us on their well curated website. The Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturizer is a refreshing, light weight moisturizer. Oil-free and packed with hypotonic acid it plums, hydrated and protects and leaves skin extra glowy! I love combining it with their Jelly Sheet Mask for and extra hit, which leaves me looking younger and fresh, as if I was transported back to summers in the sun with my brother.
Baby from Dirty Dancing might have been shy that she “carried a watermelon” but personally, I would have carried it, eaten it and bathed in it!
