Feyza Kemahlioglu is a young, inspiring and talented woman. She is passionate about creating beautiful glass sculptures, each unique in their shape and color, that add a pop of fun in any room. Whether used as candy jars, jewelry boxes, or filled with floating florals, her sculptural objects are magnificent. She’s expanded her art form to include incredible light fixtures, that truly make a room. I couldn’t get over her combination of glass and metals, in the most beautiful soft colors that gave each room a romantic glow. I am excited to see what Feyza comes up with next, as she’s definitely a woman to watch in interior design.

There is good news and bad news. The good news is that I have found a combination of products that my normally angry winter skin is so in love with. The bad news is that I’m so pleased with my current lineup, I don’t want to change anything or try anything new. This poses a slight problem for me.
I have to credit a very large portion of the look I’m so pleased with to OBAGI Medical. A month ago, I started using their Professional-C Serum 10% and their Retinol 1.0, regularly. Since then, I have noticed so many changes. My skin looks firmer, plumper (in the right places), hydrated, with fewer fine lines, and glowier.

In this new era of health and wellness, I’m noticing more boutique wellness centers popping up in major cities. I’ve investigated to find the best new businesses jumping on this trend, and I previously gave you one of my favorites in the field, Stretch’d. Well, just down the street, there’s a new spot in town, appropriately named WTHN. Much like a beautiful spa, the atmosphere is soothing and zen, quiet and peaceful. They offer a menu of acupuncture treatments dependent on the issue at hand. They have Prevent, for immunity boosting and releasing tight muscles. Heal, is a treatment used for injuries, illnesses and sleep deprivation. Lastly, my favorite, The Glow, which enhances your skin, circulating the blood flow, and relaxing the face muscles. Pairing WTHN with Stretch’d will keep you going through the winter!
Read moreWhy You Should Cleanse Your Beauty Cabinets in the New Year
A new year can mean new beginnings. A cleanse of the past, of the home, of the body, of the skin. Now that I have been back in the apartment for a week, I have prepared our surroundings to better enjoy all the things 2019 has to bring. I reorganized my daughter's toy bins and draws, donated what she has out-grown, did a little redecorating, i.e. put things where they once belonged, and I threw out random items that piled up in hidden baskets around the house. I absolutely love getting rid of things that no longer serve me, vases bouquets come in, unmatched socks, used up notebooks, dried out markers, children’s artwork with one green line on it. I love it so much, I fear I might be turning my daughter into a hoarder, with her purses filled of confetti and drawers packed with neglected dolls, all of which are “special” to her.
One of my favorites is achieving an expiration date. If I’m ever in your fridge or medicine cabinet, you can be sure that I’ve picked up the Advil or a few condiments and checked the date, and if it’s in the past, I’ve taken the liberty to dispose of it for you. I just get a strange satisfaction from it. With that said, I urge you to rummage through your products and throw out anything that has expired. Feel free to send me photos so I can live vicariously through you.
Beauty products all have a different shelf-life due to ingredients, packaging, usage and exposure. It’s important to be aware of this, as many hold bacteria and can cause unwanted issues like pinkeye and rashes, or simply don’t give you their original results. Beauty companies are not required to put expiration dates on all products, so it’s up to us to save face here.

I always seem to be drawn to a neutral palette, both in my closet, and my living spaces. There is something so refreshing, timeless, and soothing about living in a muted home. I love discovering new, talented interior designers to share with you, since many of my followers have growing families and are looking for someone to help decorate a new home, that is both kid-friendly and beautiful. One I admire, and appreciate is Alyssa Kapito. I met Alyssa in her Soho showroom for our interview, which looks like a beautiful mini apartment in and of itself. I loved her technique of using multiple textures instead of bold patterns and colors to make a room interesting. She gives a great amount of time and attention to her clients, is a pleasure to be around, and has a great eye.

As you all know I am sweating puddles over at Tracy Anderson on a daily basis, and sitting in that sweat for about 2 hours through classes. I always thought that cotton was the most breathable material to wear during my workouts, however I was sorely mistaken. After a long and informative interview with the very inspirational, Stacey Hunter, founder of Quo Active Gear, I learned that the undergarments I’d been wearing cause bacteria which lead to infection. Although it’s not the most glamorous topic, the truth is when we sit in our sweat for extended periods of time, women are prone to yeast infections and urinary tract infections, both incredibly painful and undesirable. Quo undergarments are made with science in mind, ensuring that even if we sweat for a long time, the underwear absorbs the wetness, decreasing the chance of bacteria forming. I wear them everyday, and I can attest to them being life-changing. Quo is also coming out with a full line of athleisure in the same amazing fabric very soon!

My favorite gift for the holidays are Lele Sadoughi headbands! I wear mine everyday, and it makes my outfit complete. Whether it’s a good hair day, or a bad one, I pop on a jeweled headband and instantly look put together and cohesive. Lele is incredibly creative, always having fun with bold, bright colors, and fun materials to make her costume jewelry. Her signature floral earrings are a staple in my jewelry box, and they are so light, I hardly feel like I’m wearing anything. I’m excited for her new collection of home decor and sunglasses, as whatever she designs is always very happy and beautiful.

As I check out at Sephora, a satisfaction approaches as they ask me if I am a beauty points member. I casually rattle off my phone number as my eyes wander towards the displayed samples. “You have 5075 points, would you like to exchange any today? A sense of pride suddenly makes me stand straighter, gives me a little swagger, as I pop a hip, in my sweatpants. In my imagination, all the customers around me have heard my number and are in envy, waiting with baited breath to see me pick the teeny treasure being offered to me alone.
When I get home, I immediately dump out my new products to play with them like a kid on Christmas morning. There is never more twinkle in my eye than in that moment when extra products come trickling out after the tissue paper and receipt. But here in lies the problem, the receipt. How often am I doing these shops to gain these great pleasures, and at what cost? Generally, a big one. What is it about product samples that is so satisfying? Coming from a serious commitment phob like myself, it should seem fairly obvious, but it’s more! These little packets of joy hold a special place in my most treasured makeup case. The fuller it is, the more fulfilled I feel. When I look into that bag, I feel like the world is my oyster, my options are limitless, my problems could be solved with one dip in.

I’ve been in outerwear my entire life. It was my family business for generations, and I worked right here in the garment district where our offices were located almost every summer of my childhood. I definitely know a good coat when I see one, and Michelle Waugh has mastered her craft. Michelle’s outerwear collection is elevated and chic, tailored and classic. She has coats fit for every occasion, but what’s even more special about her line is that all of her pieces can be worn both casually and formally. They are versatile. Her fabrics and fits are stellar, making women feel beautiful and confident throughout their day. Her palette is neutral, and complement any outfit. Michelle happens to be one of the sweetest, most genuine women I’ve met, and her talent makes her a triple threat!

When I first met Katherine Moffett, I was at a dear friend’s birthday dinner, and she was hired to draw every guest at the table in their unique outfits. I thought to myself, how will she draw all of us in such a short period of time? When it was my turn, I stood for her, and in less than five minutes, she had miraculously created the perfect depiction of me that evening. I was impressed! I went to visit her at her workspace downtown, and saw all of her art on the walls, and I couldn’t get over her talent. She sees people in a magnificent way, always making each portrait a fun, lively, version with pops of color. I recently used the family portrait she gifted me as a holiday card, and it was my favorite yet! I highly suggest Katherine for upcoming holiday and New Year cards, as it’s a refreshing take on the typical family photo. She also has a beautiful line of handmade cards and wallpapers she’s designed for purchase.
How many years have you been in business in NYC?
Coming up on three years as an independent designer and artist.
How did you get your start and what was your initial inspiration?
I knew I wanted to be a designer as a kid, but I really fell in love with drawing and painting at the School of Visual Arts. One day at an internship, I discovered the book, Marimekko: Fashion, Fabrics and Architecture. It clicked for me that that you could design a whole world, and that the things in it could stem from your own artwork. Marimekko created such excitement with their bold patterns. It encouraged women to BE bold and to mix timely design into their lives.
What do you feel differentiates you from others in your field?
I definitely care about creating beauty, but I also equally care about the emotion and meaning pieces convey. I never want to just leave it at style or match an existing trend.
What do you feel gives you longevity in this big city with so many options?
I always look to the work of David Hockney. He never rested on his laurels with what he was doing. He was always on to the next thing. I feel as long as an artist’s life does not become stagnant, neither will the output! Luckily living in this city, it is easy to stay curious about things and envision the future. In addition to drawing and painting individual works, I also am creating a collection of things for home and lifestyle. I recently launched my first wallpapers and am just about to release a line of holiday cards. Each new season is an invitation to think anew about what I’m doing and where I’m headed.
How do you positively impact your clientele?
I hope to provide clients with delight, but also create a heightened sense of thoughtfulness in what surrounds them. A lot of what I make is inspired by aesthetics of the past, and my curiosity about history, art movements, music, subcultures. I want the subjects I choose to be different, interesting and enriching for the those interacting with my work.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Getting inspired, being in the creative flow, seeing the vision manifest, and not having to be in a stifling corporate environment.
What is your favorite secret NYC spot?
Not sure if it is a major secret, but my husband proposed at Bar Sixty-five on the sixty-fifth floor of 30 Rock. It is only open during the week and it looks like an intact Art Deco masterpiece (I love Art Deco!) Its a way to get the view of the Rainbow Room for only the price of a martini.
How do you benefit mamas?
I hope for my future children to grow up in a society that is equally created and depicted by women, so I’m starting by utilizing my own feminine eye.
I also believe that by surrounding the family with creative and meaningful things (like artwork or playfully designed wallpaper, pillows, and stationery!) the family is encouraged to be creative themselves.
What is the most memorable feedback a client has given you?
It's fun to work with a client that is a little more of a maximalist. I usually tend towards minimalism, but with a little push, I find ways to add things and make something a little more wild or different. A healthy collaboration is just the best.
Pay it forward and name your top colleagues in the same field or related field.
So grateful to my co-working space in Chinatown, Based-in. It's filled with creative collaborators from architects to start-ups, and they tolerate me sprinkling the place with colored pencils and drawings.
A frequent collaborator, Amy Morris and Anna Polonsky of The MP Shift design fabulous and trail-blazing interiors for restaurants and hospitality.
One of my closest friends, Jackie Klempay, is forging a vital part of the contemporary art scene downtown with her gallery, Situations on Henry Street.
What is the best advice anyone's ever given you? Or what is your "mantra" / words to live by?
About six years ago my then boyfriend, now husband, gave me the advice to study the people I admire. I had only been doing this casually before, but I got serious, made a list, started reading biographies and hunting down details. This practice provides major motivation and helps in defining next steps.
In addition, I am always quoting advice from The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, THE guide to living a fulfilling, creative life.
As moms, the day can escape us, what is your best time-saving trick?
Not a mom yet, but my best trick comes from a childrens' chapter book! From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is about a girl who hides out in the Met and is solving an ancient Italian art mystery and at some crucial point of the story the character essentially says, “Five minutes of planning is worth fifteen minutes of doing."

Here is My Holiday Gift Guide
Beauty presents are truly the gift that keeps on giving. This holiday season, forgo the flowers that die in a few days, save yourself the anxiety of trying to guess their size, and no one wants another scarf, who are you kidding? Products! All we want are products! Products for relaxing, products for a younger look, products for a night out, Products for curing, products for anything! Don’t be such a Grinch and just grab a last minute coffee table book. Good beauty products will not end up in the garbage, or be an insult, or get tossed to the back of the coat closet, or collect dust on the bookshelf. I’m not saying to go buy someone wrinkle creams and pimple products, but instead, offer up some self-care, it is the ultimate act of love.

There’s a new app in town, and it was founded by two veterans of the e-commerce world, Lizzy Brockhoff and Elizabeth Shaffer, and the app is called MASSE. When we first met, the day of their launch, I was astounded by what they’d created. It was literally Mama & Tata in an app, and it was genius. Essentially, they sought out to create a resource for women, particularly mothers, where there was shared, tried and true, reliable information on products. They wanted to create a space for friends and colleagues to share their experience with products, in order to easily find the best options. Just like me, they are about sharing information that is free, meaning no paid advertising or dishonest sponsored information. Simply a way to easily go back to friends and family for some good advice regarding what’s on the market. I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot more of these women, as their app becomes a big success.

All of you ask me about my skincare regimen, and now I’m sharing my secret weapon! Biologique Recherche skincare products have changed my life. I started using them exclusively a bit over a year ago, and I’ve had a natural glow ever since. There are many estheticians who do custom Biologique facials in New York, but none better than Aida Bicaj! Aida has been training with the company the longest, and her technique is proof of that. She takes her time molding my face, paying attention to exactly what it needs each time I come, always getting a different variation of the facial, as our skin requires different serums and masks depending on different circumstances and conditions. When Aida works on my face, I’m always amazed when she shows me the comparison of the side she has completed versus the incomplete half. It’s incredible how she lifts and tightens the face with her machines; it actually appears as if I had a surgical procedure. I swear by the daily regimen she has prescribed for me, as my skin has never looked better. She is a quality human, a true talent, and a dear friend.

Recently, I had a friend call from California with what she thought was a groundbreaking product discovery. When she told me what this quantum leap was, I immediately felt my confused expression lines getting deeper. After explaining to her how this product was already one of my top 10 must-haves, and a staple in my beauty cabinet, I realized that in my journey to enlighten and brighten, to inform everyone on all things beauty, that I may have overlooked one of my favorite products, assuming it was already well-known.

I go for facials regularly, and typically it’s Biologique Recherche. However, I am always open to finding new methods to further tone my face, and give me a healthy glow. It seemed like everywhere I went, people were talking about Face Love, and how this woman re-sculpts your face with just her hands. She was so popular, it was difficult to get an appointment, but I finally found her in the new space she took at Stretch’d. The vibe is incredibly zen and relaxing, and when Rachel Lang’s hands touch your face, you can feel the magic happen. She uses her hands and tools to circulate the blood in your skin and stimulate collagen. It was like facial exercise, and it worked! My face felt instantly lifted, and even my husband noticed and complimented my fresh, rosy skin.

Read moreMama-of-the-Moment: The Line's Vanessa Traina
Describe yourself in 4 words…
Loving, loyal, dedicated, compassionate.
Tell us the story of how you launched The Line.
A childhood friend of mine was interested in developing a concept in the fashion and retail space and brought me on to conceptualize it. The idea actually started at the brand level and The Line was intended to be a launching pad for these new brands. We wanted to create a home of warmth, intimacy and discovery where we could easily introduce new concepts. It can take time for new brands to garner attention or attract an audience and by surrounding them in this world of familiarity there was an immediate traction.
How do your children inspire you in your business?
As a child and an adult, I have been so inspired by my mother. She is incredibly hard working and passionate about what she does and I am grateful to have had such a strong powerful woman and mother to look up to. I have been lucky to have known what my passion was from a young age, to pursue that passion and to love what I do. I hope to set that example of hard work and dedication for my children, as my mother did for me. My children inspire me to be the best version of myself. I hope that I may set the same example for them that my mother did for me.
How do you carve out time for yourself in the week while juggling your family and work schedule?
I think any mother will tell you that as soon as you have children, your needs suddenly come last. I always try to be home for the boys’ dinner and bedtime, but I try to squeeze in regular workouts with my trainer and lunches with friends to maintain my sanity! Once the children are sleeping, my husband and I get to have our date nights and some quality time, which is also essential.
Who are your favorite emerging designers right now?
KHAITE and Brock Collection. Both happen to be brands that I work with and adore :)
How do you select the brands that you invest in?
I look for brands that have staying power and growth potential, who are developing new concepts in interesting categories and filling a gap in the market. I do not look for trend driven brands or anything too "of the moment."
The Apartment by The Line was such a creative, innovative concept for fashion, what inspired you to open? How do you find the brands you carry in the store?
The concept for The Line was to bridge the gap between online and offline so establishing a brick and mortar space from the time of launch was instantly very important to us. I wanted to create a space where we could really tell a story and show products as they are intended to be seen and used in the context of someone’s life and home. It became clear that the only way for this to truly feel authentic was if we were to literally build out the store in a home setting. I will never forget when I arrived at the store on the evening of our launch party, the elevator doors opened and I did a double take as I thought I was accidentally walking into someone’s apartment; it was at that moment that I knew we had truly created something special and unique.
You clearly have a great eye, what have been your favorite childrens' clothing designers since becoming a Mama?
I have to say I didn’t think that I would have this much fun dressing boys! I am very traditional in my taste when it comes to children’s clothes and I love the boy’s clothes from Marie Chantal, Il Gufo and Bonpoint. The Tot also has a wonderful assortment of clothes and goodies with a wide range of styles.
What is your favorite family vacation destination?
We escape to the Hamptons on the weekends and it is such a special place for us where we can really unwind, relax and have quality time as a family. We also love to visit my family in California and my husband’s family in Europe so the boys can have time with their grandparents and extended family.
What values do you hope to instill in your children?
I hope they will be kind, compassionate, curious, empathetic, passionate, driven, open, loving… I could go on and on!
A Pencil to Help You Achieve That Perfect Brow
In the 90s, thin structured eyebrows were in style, picture Drew Barrymore and Kate moss. Of course, I had to be right there on trend with them, so one day, I gave it a shot with my tweezers. Curiously, my eyebrows never grew back as full. I always consider this to be a blessing, I never have a single stray that needs to be plucked and nothing is ever out of place. This was all fine and well until now, as it seems we are in the era of the eyebrow. Now every time I find myself with an esthetician, they recommend I grow my brows in so they can reshape them for me. (Insert irritated glare here.) this is almost always followed up with “don’t worry they look good,” except for that one time when a lovely eyebrow gentleman voluntarily told me that my brows made me look a little cross eyes. Thanks for that buddy.
I must admit that the thought of two patches of hair placed in center of one's face weirds me out sometimes, especially if I stare at them long enough. Then again, I’ve seen pictures of people with no brows, and I'm pretty sure that's not for me.
I know that eyebrows are functional, and that we benefit from that functionality, but that’s not what I wish to discuss, I’m into the superficial here. I’ve finally started testing my hand at this "bigger is better" trend happening north of the eyeball, and I have to admit, it has taken me time, patience, and a better understanding, for me to get it right. For me, this means NOT looking like Bert from "Sesame Street," with all due respect to ya Bert.

We all know I’m a total exercise addict, but because of this addiction, my body needs some extra TLC. I work out for 2 hours most days at Tracy Anderson, and the heavy impact is hard on my legs and feet. Most times I have a physical therapist friend who helps with cupping and deep tissue massage, however she has been traveling, and I needed a new place to turn to. Amanda Freeman, recently opened her new business, Stretch’d http://stretchdspace.com, a beautiful, open, airy space dedicated to stretching the body to eliminate aches and pains, and get the body aligned. She has an incredible staff, that know the body well, and you leave feeling loose and relaxed. They use both their hands and machines like the TheraGun to get deep into the achey places. Amanda is no stranger to the wellness world, as she also founded SLT years ago. She’s really onto something, and I know both men and women could benefit from the various treatments at Stretch’d.
How many years have you been in business in NYC?
We have been in business for 5 months.
How did you get your start and what was your initial inspiration?
I began my career as a trend forecaster studying the consumer behavior of Generation X & Millenials. Twelve years ago, I worked on a trend we called the "Rise of Well-consciousness" and ever since I’ve been a serial wellness entrepreneur. My first wellness endeavor was a healthy living daily e-newsletter called Vital Juice. RIP! We delivered the latest information in fitness, nutrition, beauty and wellness to the inboxes of over 250,000 women. I got so obsessed with boutique fitness that in 2011, I opened my own studios called SLT. Nearly 7 years later, we’re opening our 25th location later this month.
The idea for Stretch*d came from my observations of the fit folks around me who were spending an average of 5 days a week engaged in high impact workouts and suffering from injuries. As a society, we’ve been so focused on working out (and living) to the max, but forgetting about recovery. I had observed in my studios, as well as at others, that clients often skipped out of classes before the stretch at the end. Yet, when these same people worked out one-on-one with a trainer, they relished the last 5 minutes when they’d get stretched out. Thus, Stretch*d was born.
What do you feel differentiates you from others in your field?
There are other companies that offer one-on-one assisted stretch services, however I believe we’ve created a best-in-class training program and stretch protocol. I also believe we offer the best customer experience. We’ve created a premium brand and space that goes beyond basic stretch services. Lastly, we also offer in-home and office stretch.
What do you feel gives you longevity in this big city with so many options?
The key to success in NYC is the combination of offering a reliably outstanding service that delivers results, along with creating a brand people want to be a part of.
How do you positively impact your clientele?
We make them feel better, provide them a respite from their daily activities and offer them a better quality of life.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I am driven by offering clients a service that makes them happy and healthy. I love getting positive feedback and hearing the impact it’s making on people’s lives. I hate negative feedback, but am open to learning from it.
What is your favorite secret NYC spot?
Hmm…hard to keep anything great a secret in NYC these days. Souen isn’t a secret, but it’s my fave Macrobiotic eating spot that most people dismiss as too healthy. I could pour their carrot ginger dressing on anything and happily eat it.
How do you benefit mamas?
Stretch*d is an amazing service for a mom. We lug our kids around, tote heavy handbags and juggle so much that are bodies are screaming for relief. Stretch*d is that relief and respite from a busy day. We are also a safe and effective pampering experience for expecting moms.
What is the most memorable feedback a client has given you?
We’ve been getting awesome feedback from both men and women alike. However, most striking are the rave reviews from many of the male clients. Some are fitness-enthusiasts, but many have just been looking for an antidote to the wear and tear of sitting at a desk all day and not feeling like there are many pampering options geared towards men.
Pay it forward and name your top colleagues in the same field or related field.
I love FaceLove for a heavenly face massage and tenoverten for a non-toxic mani/pedi.
What is the best advice anyone's ever given you? Or what is your "mantra" / words to live by?
My mantra is “More, Worse”. It’s a long story, but probably the most valuable thing I can share, so I’m gonna tell it and you can cut or edit as you see fit.
During a class I took at Harvard Business School called Women Building Businesses, I was struck by a common occurrence I saw happen with nearly every female CEO who spoke to our class. They were all incredibly successful in their careers at the expense of their personal lives. When asked about their “work/life balance,” nearly all of them broke down in tears because they had decided to, as one CEO put it, “Do less, better.” They chose focus on one area of their life (their career) and knock it out of the park, and that was always what being a killer CEO of a Fortune 500 company meant.
I was so struck by the regret I saw in these women, that I made the decision to “Do more, worse.” I no longer wanted to be CEO of a giant company if it meant forgoing some of the personal experiences I also wanted to have like having kids, being in a relationship, being a present mom/friend/sister, etc. I would rather have what I like to call “abundant mediocrity”. I am willing to be less than perfect if it means not missing out on the important things in life.
As moms, the day can escape us, what is your best time-saving trick?
I shower at night after my kids are asleep and air dry my hair.
